Vision
El Centro Cultural de las
Americas is an organization founded on the premise that
Tucson's Hispanic heritage is too valuable to lose and needs
to be preserved. There is evidence from local
institutions of higher learning that a mix of cultural
programs, together with an educational environment, has the
potential to develop professionals needed to meet the
demands of Tucson's future.
The opportunity to explore the
vision of an organization that would heighten Hispanic
cultural awareness and help to nurture individuals'
professional development brought together 80 community-based
organizations in the spring of 1990. An organizing
group was appointed with the task of developing El Centro's
mission. This group then became the Board of Directors
and they, in turn, established the following Mission
Statement:
"To
establish an internationally recognized center which
preserves and promotes, for future generations, all forms
of Hispanic cultural expression."
El Centro's Vision is to
provide...
- A way to nurture Hispanic
culture in an educational setting, which provides for
individual professional development and ultimately
builds a bridge between higher education and Hispanics.
- A structured program to
promote Hispanic culture ... music, dance, drama, art,
literature, photography, theatre, and crafts.
- A growing, changing
Hispanic community with a better educated and trained
population to meet current and future American
challenges.
